Windber's Lucas Oleksa has cemented his legacy as one of the area's top defensive talents, earning Class 1A All-State linebacker honors by the Pennsylvania Football Writers. His remarkable season spearheaded a tenacious Rambler defense that held opponents to no more than seven points per game over a dominant seven-week span, redefining the team's identity midseason.
For Lucas, the recognition is the culmination of years of hard work and determination. "This means everything to me," he said. "Since early season, I was striving for all-state. I always wanted to make it and get my picture on the wall in our school. I've always walked down the hallway and saw all these guys that I look up to. It's truly awesome to be a part of it."
Lucas was also named the Daily American All-23 Football Team Defensive Player of the Year, reflecting his pivotal role in Windber's success. The standout linebacker recorded 45 tackles, including 15 for a loss, and led Somerset County with an impressive 13 sacks. He also forced and recovered a fumble, showcasing his ability to deliver in critical moments.
The Ramblers needed a spark after a sluggish 3-2 start to the season, and Lucas delivered on both sides of the ball, igniting a turnaround that carried the team to new heights. His relentless commitment to excellence in practice, the weight room, and on the field set the tone for his teammates.
"I think the biggest thing for him is that it starts with his leadership," said Windber head coach Matt Grohal. "His commitment to the program and his work ethic—he never took reps off in practice or the weight room. He does everything the way you want a kid to do it when you're coaching them. When you put everything together, he had a phenomenal season, and he certainly sparked our turnaround midseason. This is such a deserving award for him because he does everything the right way with 100% attention to detail. When you do things like that, you receive awards like this."
For Lucas, the recognition goes beyond personal achievement. "I am truly blessed to be in this position. I want to thank God and the coaching staff for where I am at today," he said.
His season not only earned him individual accolades but also solidified his status as a leader and role model for the program, inspiring younger players who will one day aim to follow in his footsteps.
